Beautiful South

Our quarterly showcase for South London's film-making talent run in conjunction with BFI Southbank and Live! Magazine returns on May 8th, for an evening of screenings, networking and discussion. There will again be two strands: the first at 5:30 is a showcase for the various excellent training schemes in the borough; and the second at 7:30 features works selected from open submission.

Inspired by various BFI programmes this month, May’s theme for the open strand is ‘Little Britain’ exploring notions of home and identity, both national and local.

Submissions must be received with a self addressed stamped envelope and a completed application form by April 23rd, addressed to:

Beautiful South
c/o Paul Green,
The Hayward, Southbank Centre
Belvedere Road,
London, SE1 8XZ.

We can accept DVD (mpeg), DV, or 16mm only. Preference will be given to films which reflect the current theme, and all successful applicants will be notified by May 1st. For further information, or to request an application form, please email us at beautifulsouth@bfi.org.uk

EXISTENTIAL COMPUTING

PART 1, SENTIMENTALITY:
A 5 DAY WORKSHOP WITH MILTOS MANETAS AT THE HAYWARD IN LONDON
1. There is "sympathy" between humans and computers, there are "feelings".
1.1 In both directions.
2. There are new theories about time. Maybe time doesn't even exist!
3. People meet and exchange information. There are institutions such as The Hayward that invite artists such as myself to talk to people. I suspect it is just data that they
want to know about each other.
4. Art is what is happening when data meet beautifully. This is very rare.

Miltos Manetas is an internationally renowned artist born in Greece in 1964. He lives in London and Los Angeles and his Internet Paintings (internetpaintings.com) are exhibited at the gallery Blow de la Barra in London (blowdelabarra.com) from 27 January 2007.
Manetas makes websites that are art works, they hang on the internet as a painting hang on the walls of a museum. Manetas signs them as unique pieces and collectors buy them as such. (see: jacksonpollock.org)
In 2000, he started Neen (neen.org), a new art movement.
More about Manetas: www.manetas.com

Website of the project (under construction):
http://existentialcomputing.com

Join Miltos at The Hayward for a five-day workshop to explore digital art and work together to create a work that will be showcased at The Hayward on Saturday 3 March.
The "Digital Dialogues" series of workshops are part of the 100 IDEAS programme.

Time: 12pm – 5pm
Dates: 13 – 17 Feb 2007
Venue: Waterloo Sunset Pavilion, The Hayward, Southbank Centre, London

These workshops are FREE. To enrol please contact Paul Green: paul.green@southbankcentre.co.uk

Bio Mapping Lambeth

How do you feel about the area that you live in?
Which areas do you have a physical and emotional response to?

The Hayward are running workshops with artist Christian Nold to create bio maps of areas in Brixton and Clapham.

The Bio Mapping tool allows the wearer to record their Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), which is a simple indicator of emotional arousal, in conjunction with their geographical location. This can be used to plot a map that highlights points of high and low arousal. By sharing this data we can construct maps that visualise where we as a community feel stressed and excited

These workshops involve a walk around the area followed by a download session where your physical responses are downloaded and mapped on Google Earth

These workshops are FREE and promise to be a fascinating insight into your community

It is strongly recommended that you register your interest beforehand as the number of participants has to be limited to a maximum of 10

Meeting and download point:
Brixton - Monday 29 Jan. Meet at Brixton Library at 2.30pm
Clapham - Monday 12 Feb. Meet at Clapham City Learning Centre

For more information and to register your interest in either of these workshops please e-mail Paul.green@southbankcentre.co.uk
